Make Way Day is a national initiative aimed at raising awareness about the obstacles people with disabilities face in their everyday lives. Organized by the Disability Federation of Ireland (DFI), this day focuses on promoting accessibility and reminding everyone of the small but significant steps we can take to make our communities more inclusive.
It’s easy to overlook how everyday items like wheelie bins, bicycles, and illegally parked cars can become major barriers for those with mobility challenges, people using wheelchairs, those with visual impairments, or parents pushing prams. For these individuals, a seemingly minor obstruction can force dangerous detours into traffic or even prevent them from reaching their destination altogether.
On Make Way Day, we ask you to be mindful of where you leave things. Clearing footpaths and public spaces of unnecessary obstacles makes a world of difference to someone who relies on accessible routes. Next time you take out the bin, park your car, or leave your bike, take a moment to ensure it’s not blocking the way for someone else.
Let’s all work together to create a community where everyone can move freely and safely.
