  • ORANGE WEATHER WARNING

ORANGE WEATHER WARNING

News / 3 January 2025
Orange Cold Weather Warning

Tips for keeping warm
Here is some advice for keeping warm:
DO
dress in layers - a few light layers will keep you warmer than 1 heavy layer
wear thermal underwear
keep active indoors by walking around or try some indoor exercises
hot drinks can also help you keep warm - have them during the day and before bed
Don't
do not go out in extreme weather if possible

Tips for your home.
Keep your home warm
It can be hard to keep the heating on if you are worried about bills. But it's important to keep your home warm. It will help you avoid getting sick and keep your home from getting damp. If possible, try to heat the room you spend the most time in to about 18 to 21 degrees Celsius
Heavy curtains and draught excluders help to keep the heat in. Leave heating on for longer periods at lower settings, even while away. Doing this allows warm air to circulate and will help prevent pipes and tanks from freezing in the cold weather.

Circulate warm air to unheated areas
Opening doors to unheated areas of your home occasionally to allow warm air to circulate can prevent pipes and tanks from freezing in the cold weather.

Running your taps will not prevent pipes from freezing

This is especially important as this can cause frozen drains and puts undue pressure on supplies across the network.

When the outside temperature drops below zero, unprotected pipes and dripping taps can freeze and crack. This can affect your water supply.
When the temperature rises again, these cracked pipes can then leak, causing damage which can be costly to repair. When the temperature is below zero, it's particularly important to take extra steps to prevent water in your pipes freezing. If you have no water or low water pressure in the winter, your pipes may already be frozen.

How to check for frozen pipes
If one or more of your taps has stopped working, check with your neighbours to see if they are also experiencing issues. If they are then there may an issue with the water supply. Call Irish Water 1800 278 278

If your neighbours are not experiencing issues, you may have a frozen pipe.
Turn off the water supply
This will limit the amount of leakage or damage if a pipe bursts:
Find and turn off your inside stop valve
Turn off the stopcock in your cold-water tank
Locate the pipe
Check the water pressure in appliances such as taps and toilets to see if it is lower than usual
Locate the general area where you think there may be a frozen pipe
Check for visible pipes that are not insulated, pipes that feel much colder than others, have nearby draughts or damage
Turn on nearby cold taps to relieve pressure on the frozen pipe - NEVER turn on the hot taps

Thaw the pipe
If the pipe and fittings are not cracked or broken, you can try gently thawing the pipe
Protect or move anything which might be damaged if the pipe bursts when thawed
Use a hairdryer on the lowest setting to gently warm the pipe, starting at the end nearest the tap

NEVER attempt to thaw out frozen pipes by switching on your immersion, central heating, blow torch etc.

Call Circle to report your repair on 01-4072110 and selecting option 2 – Repairs.
We operate an out-of-office emergency line. This line is open from 5pm to 9am Monday to Friday and all-day Saturday, Sunday, and Bank Holidays. In the case of an emergency (i.e. fire or flood) please phone 053-9374832.
