Do you suffer with Migraines?

What Are Migraines?

Migraines are intense headaches often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. They can last anywhere from a few hours to several days.

Common Causes of Migraines at work

While the triggers for migraines can vary from person to person, some common causes include:

Stress: Increased levels of stress are a significant trigger for many migraine sufferers. Both physical stress, such as fatigue and overexertion, and emotional stress, such as anxiety or tension, can lead to migraines.

Sensory Overload: Prolonged exposure to screens, bright or flickering lights, or intense visual stimuli can precipitate a migraine.

Physical Factors: Physical exertion, dehydration, and poor posture can also contribute to migraines. Straining the neck and shoulders, for example, can lead to tension headaches that may develop into migraines.

Environmental Factors: Bright or flashing lights, loud noises, strong smells (such as perfumes or chemicals), and changes in weather or barometric pressure can trigger migraines.

Tips for Preventing Migraines at work

While not all migraines can be prevented, you can take some steps to help reduce their frequency and severity:

Manage Stress: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga to manage stress. Regular physical activity, like walking or swimming, can also help reduce stress and prevent migraines. I f you are feeling stressed, please speak to your line manager or ask for information on our employee assistance programme (EAP).

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration, a common trigger for migraines. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake, as these can dehydrate the body. There are filtered water dispensers on each floor in Phoenix house, make use of them!

Exercise Regularly: Engage in regular, moderate exercise to improve overall health and reduce the frequency of migraines. Activities like walking, cycling, and swimming are excellent.

Practice Good Posture: Be mindful of your posture, especially if you spend long hours sitting at a desk. Ensure your workstation is ergonomically set up to reduce strain on your neck and shoulders. If you have not yet completed a VDU assessment or feel you need a new one, please reach out to your line manager who can advise.

Adjust Screen Settings:  Adjust screen brightness to a comfortable level to minimize eye strain.

Use Proper Lighting: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit to reduce glare on the screen. Avoid using screens in dark rooms, which can increase contrast and strain your eyes.
